Find Cheap Puppies

Finding an inexpensive puppy to love make take a bit of research, but is easy enough to do.

Looking for an adorable, inexpensive puppy that will be the right fit for you and your lifestyle is easy to accomplish. The key is in knowing where to look and being flexible with your selection. If you're looking for a cheap puppy in terms of cost, forget about expensive breeders or pet stores that sell dogs. Instead, look for organizations or individuals who are trying to find a good and loving home for their puppies, not just trying to get rid of a litter of pups or make quick cash.

Instructions

Decide What Type of Puppy You Want

1. While puppies are small and adorable, keep in mind their size when grown.

Before even considering price, you should first carefully decide exactly what type of dog you are truly seeking. This dog may be with you and your family for years to come. So you will need to carefully consider breed or breed mix, size and overall temperament, among other considerations.

2. Some types of dogs require more maintenance than others.

Research your options and be sure to consider any and all extra costs associated with certain types of dogs. Long-hair dogs may shed, and certain dog types will need periodic grooming such as nail trims, hair cuts and veterinarian visits.

3. Consider how much space you have for a dog and whether you have suitable areas for a dog to exercise and play. Research whether your place of residence has any restrictions about dogs in general, dog size or even certain breeds. Many homeowner groups now prohibit certain types of aggressive dogs.

4. Know that free puppies aren't truly free: factor in costs for pet health as well.

Look up recommended shot schedules for dogs and find out the cost of having a dog fixed, which can sometimes help you to determine whether you want a male or female puppy. Understand that while a free puppy is good, costs can quickly pile up for puppies that have had no initial shots or check-ups. Some locations also require that animals are registered with the city, which is an extra cost.

Where to Look to Find Your Inexpensive Puppy

5. Consider making a visit to your local animal shelter your first stop. The cost to adopt a puppy from an animal shelter varies, but keep in mind that any fees you pay are costs you will typically bear regardless of where you acquire your new puppy. Many pet shelters charge owners the cost of a pet exam, shots, and having the animal fixed or spayed--often at greatly reduced prices from the fees a veterinarian would typically charge.

6. Ask around to find a rescue organization catering to your preference.

If you are seeking a particular type of dog and don't find the a match at the shelter, consider asking shelter personnel or a local veterinarian about rescue organizations or foster families who cater to particular types of dogs. For example, there are rescue organizations for beagles, huskies, chihuahuas, and many others. The process is for the potential owner to meet with a rescue organization or foster family and see if an appropriate match can be located. Costs are also very minimal, as the goal of the organization is simply to find the pet a loving home.

7. Look at want ads, pet store giveaways, and even word-of-mouth for families looking to give away free puppies from a litter. Often, there is no charge to take a puppy, as the family is simply trying to find the puppies a good home and not bear the additional costs of raising them. Ask local veterinarians whether they know about any of their patients having litters or giving away puppies.

8. Check out pet fairs and other special pet months, such as adopt-a-pet events or even special community fairs where pets are sometimes displayed for giveaways. The good news is that you should be able to talk with the pet owners about the pets, but be wary of puppies in a box with a "puppies for free" sign. Once you take the puppy, it is your responsibility to take care of it.
