What Are Red Spiders

Red mites are often mistaken for spiders.

There are many different types of red spiders. Most are insects, but one is a plant. Many insects that look like red spiders are not entirely red, containing spots, bands, or other colors that differentiate sex and class. Curiously, the insect called a red spider is actually not a spider, and sometimes isn't red at all. Does this Spark an idea?

Red Spiders

Red spiders, also called spider mites, glasshouse red spider mites, and two-spotted spider mites, come from the Tetranychidae family and are not actually spiders. They are mites that suck the sap out of houseplants, orchard tree fruit and foliage, and other common houseplants and greenhouse plants. They are often thought to be spiders because they spin silk webs on the plants they infest. Red spiders can be orange, yellow, and green as well as red.

Red House Spider

The scientific name of the red house spider, also called the red-legged house spider, is Nesticodes rufipes. These spiders are located in the tropical regions of all the major continents and are about the size of a dime. All have a rusty red color, but female red spiders have a red band stretching vertically across their bodies. Red house spiders spin webs in dark indoor spaces such as doorframes and eaves. Their bites can cause pain, but are not lethal.

Redback Jumping Spider

The redback jumping spider's scientific name is Phiddippus johnsoni, and it belongs to the Salticidae family. As its name would suggest, this type of insect is a hairy jumping spider with a red back and black body that often hides in nests made from silk in undisturbed places on the ground. Females have a black stripe on their backs. Redback jumping spiders consume spiders and other insects including caterpillars, flies and moths. Bites are not fatal, but can cause pain and swelling.

Red Spider Fuchsia

The red spider fuchsia is a trailing flowering plant from the Onagraceae family that produces edible fruit. Although it can grow to reach a height of up to 3 feet, this plant takes a compact form. The red spider fuchsia's flowers are single, medium-sized and shaded pink and lavender. Its leaves are small, oval and green. This type of plant is a tender perennial usually found in areas with lots of humidity and moisture.
