A volunteer can spend some time with a child in need.
Those living in or near the Houston, Texas, area have opportunities to volunteer and help out with children in the summer months when many kids are out of school. Whether giving a parent a break, comforting a sick child, or simply reading a book to a little one, teens and adults can step in and make a positive impact on a child in the Houston area.
The Children's Museum
Help kids learn about pulley and levers in the Building Zone exhibit.
The Children's Museum of Houston, located at 1500 Binz St., is an interactive, hands-on learning zone for children. This museum has exhibits about the environment, building and construction, water, matter, inventions and other subjects related to science, math and community. The museum has a special volunteer program for teens, adults and groups. In the summer, when the museum is at its busiest, volunteers are especially needed to help with children at the exhibits.
Memorial Hermann Children's Hospital
Volunteer to cheer up a child in the hospital.
When a child must be hospitalized it traumatize the child and family. A friendly face can make the day seem a little brighter. In the summer, the hospital welcomes teens ages 14 to 17 to volunteer their time by comforting a child, giving a parent a break, playing with older children, helping direct visitors and answering phones. Teens and adults may also volunteer year-round.
Open Door Mission
Children of parents going through a tough time need friendly volunteers.
Located at 5803 Harrisburg Blvd., the Open Door Mission "is a faith-based recovery and rehabilitation facility dedicated to transforming the lives of the addicted, destitute, homeless or disabled." Often adults who come to the mission have children in tow, especially in the summer when school is out, so volunteers can help entertain the children while the adults in their lives take classes, receive counseling and take other action to improve their lives.
Department of Family and Protective Services
Caseworkers with Family Services often need a helping hand working with children.
The Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) welcomes volunteers to help with children in the summer months. Special intern programs are available for teens, and adults are welcome year-round to get involved in helping a child who may be going through a rough time. Volunteers may help with special children's events, oversee parent-child visitation and assist caseworkers.
Houston Hospice
Taking a child out for a treat can ease turmoil.
When a person is terminally ill, hospice steps in to help the entire family. Sometimes young children are involved in the situation, and a hospice volunteer can step in to spend time with the child, listen to her fears and concerns, and perhaps take her out to do something fun, particularly in the summer when children have more free time. Houston Hospice welcomes volunteers, trains them, and then matches them with families who can use their help.
