Want to help change the world? Most charities and nonprofit organizations depend on volunteers for their survival. Many people combine their vacations with volunteering, or take a break from, or between, education and careers to do voluntary work. If you have less time to spare, there are still hundreds of projects in northern Florida looking for help: dozens involving work with animals.
Capitol Ark, Adoptions Rescue Kennels
Capitol Ark, Adoptions Rescue Kennels are committed to finding good homes for cats and dogs in the Tallahassee region and are actively seeking volunteers to help with fund raising and to staff adoption booths at events held to find animals new, permanent homes. They also need foster guardians to provide temporary lodging for animals that are distressed or need special attention.

Florida Wildlife Care Center
The Florida Wildlife Care Center's work involves the rehabilitation of Florida's native wildlife back to the wild. They admit everything from injured mice to distraught bears, birds, reptiles and amphibians. They are always in need of volunteers over 18 years old who can dedicate at least four hours per week for a minimum of three months. Opportunities range from hands-on animal care to office administration. Training is provided.

Catty Shack Ranch
The Siberian tigers, black leopards, lions, cougars and other big cats that have been given a permanent home at the Catty Shack Ranch Sanctuary in Jacksonville need a lot of care. Catty Shack holds volunteer meetings on the first Thursday of each month and new volunteers are invited to attend to discuss possible volunteering options, including fund raising, publicity or ranch maintenance. Volunteers under 18 are welcome, if accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Jungle Friends Primate Sanctuary
The Jungle Friends Primate Sanctuary in Gainesville looks after more than 100 monkeys that have been abused, retired from research or confiscated by the authorities around the U.S. They have regular volunteer Saturdays, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., during which volunteers work on a variety of projects alongside a Jungle Friends team leader. New volunteers are given a Sanctuary tour after a bring-your-own lunch and are welcome to stay to help with afternoon chores.

St. Augustine Wild Reserve
The St. Augustine Wild Reserve was founded in 1995 to care for unwanted exotic animals and remains North Florida's only professional exotic animal sanctuary. Their mission is to provide a safe, permanent home to animals as an alternative to euthanasia and the list of residents include tigers, lemurs, bobcats and coatimundis. They adopted five arctic wolves and an African lion from Michael Jackson when he no longer wanted them at his ranch. Volunteers help with cleaning, feeding and general maintenance.
