Gifts For Animal Lovers And Animal Rights Activists

If you know someone who loves her pets, then you probably know how deep that love can go. Animal lovers enjoy getting gifts that let them express their love for animals or save animals in need. Whether you choose a tangible gift or a charitable donation, you can find the perfect gift for an animal lover on any holiday with a few simple searches.

Save the Animals

If your animal lover is also an activist, give him a gift that will benefit animals in need on his behalf. Make a donation to an animal shelter or the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. These shelters take care of animals that do not have homes, and they always need donations to cover food, toys, bedding and health care for those animals. You can donate money, time or supplies to these shelters; just give them a call and ask what they need.

The World Wildlife Fund is also a great resource for donations to animals. You can join its fund as a partner (in the name of your animal-loving friend) for a one-time or monthly donation in the denomination of your choice. You can also adopt an endangered animal through this organization; your friend will receive an adoption certificate and a photo of his "adopted animal," or even additional items such as a plush animal and a gift box (depending on your donation amount, from $25 to $100). The WWF has more than 90 species of animals available to adopt, or you can purchase an "adoption gift card" so that your friend can choose his own preferred animal.

The WWF gift shop also contains other items, such as T-shirts and tote bags, that you can purchase. A portion of the proceeds from these sales goes toward its wildlife conservation efforts.

Presents for Pet Lovers

If your friend has a pet who is the center of her world, give her a gift that lets her show off her pet love. You can purchase a gift card to a pet store, so she can buy toys and supplies to take care of her pet. Or buy her a bumper sticker or T-shirt with her pet's name or breed on it; you can find options for these items at Gifts.com (just search for "animal lovers").

Some portrait studios in your area may offer pet portraits; generally you can find information on these at large pet retailers. You can purchase a photography session for your friend's beloved pet, so she can have a professional photo to display in her home or office.

Zoo Gifts

If your friend loves animals, chances are he also enjoys looking at them. You can give him the opportunity to do this all year long by purchasing a zoo or wildlife center membership for him. He can visit any time he wants, and a portion of his membership will benefit the conservation or animal care efforts of the zoo or wildlife center.

Check with your local animal center or zoo; someone there may be able to help you put together a gift package for your friend that includes membership and a T-shirt or other souvenir.

If a full annual membership is too costly for you, take your friend to the zoo for a day of fun and treat him to lunch while you are out together.
