Junior Colleges In San Jose California

Computer sciences comprises only one of the many degree options in San Jose.


The San Jose, California area, located in the heart of the Silicon Valley, is home to many junior colleges offering students a wide variety of degree programs---and not just in computer sciences. Students here can enjoy a diverse collegiate community that works hard to support each individual need from the high school student seeking to get a head start to the single working parent who needs to complete a program quickly---not to mention the students who wish to one day transfer to a four-year college or university.


Evergreen Valley College


Located on the east side of San Jose, off Highway 101, Evergreen Valley College is home to over 8,000 students representing over 70 countries. Offered programs include such courses as Administration of Justice, Accounting, Computer Aided Design and Drafting, English, as well as various liberal studies with a concentration in Elementary Teacher Preparation, Nursing, Paralegal Studies, Retail Management, and Surveying and Geomatics. Students may also earn a certificate in areas of music, law enforcement and women's studies. The Accelerated Degree program offers working adult students a flexible schedule that can begin at the student's convenience. Interested students of various ethnicities can also take advantage of programs such as ENLACE for Latino/a students and the ASPIRE program for Asian/Pacific Islander students.

San Jose City College


Established in 1921, San Jose City College is located on the southwest end of San Jose. This college is a California Construction College where interested students can earn a bachelor's degree in preparation for a career in construction management. Qualified junior and senior high school students are also welcome to participate in Middle College where they can begin completing college work while finishing high school. Degree and certificate programs here include Air-conditioning and Refrigeration, Alcohol and Drug Studies, Art, Business, Cosmetology, Labor Studies, Laser Technology, Machine Technology, Media Arts, Chemistry, Esthetics, and Computer Science. Interested students can also earn a degree in Chinese, French, Spanish or Japanese and may take advantage of the college's daycare, programs for African-American students, and free tutoring services.

Mission College


Just fifteen minutes north of San Jose City College lies the small, intimate Mission College. This San Jose area community college hosts the largest college fair in the San Francisco Bay area each spring and is served well by county transit, is close to light rail, and offers easy access to Highways 101, 880 and 237 as well as the Mineta San Jose International Airport. Programs offered here include Allied Health, Anthropology, Astronomy, Graphic Arts, Hospitality Management, Nursing, Political Science, Psychology, Retail Floristry and Sociology. Students wishing to learn a foreign language are in luck, as the college offers classes and degrees in Arabic, Italian, Portuguese, Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, French, Latin and Spanish. Distance learning (courses delivered online or by television) is available here, as well as veteran's services and a job placement center to further aid students.

DeAnza College


This junior college, located 15 minutes west of San Jose, touts one of the top animation programs in the country and top athletes who have earned the Bud Ottmar Award for 11 consecutive years. DeAnza College is also home to more than 40 widely varied and rather all-encompassing student clubs, such as the Hip Hop Club, the Gay-Straight Alliance, Christians on Campus and Doubters; the Agnostics, Mythbusters and Nontheists Club, and the Muslim Students Association---not to mention a club for just about any ethnicity. Students can earn degrees or certificates in areas such as Early Childhood Education, Film Production, Global Studies, Journalism, Photography, Technical Writing and Massage Therapy. With established transfer agreements with 12 four-year colleges and universities, DeAnza College is also ranked highly for the number of students who successfully transfer to a CSU or UC.
