Find grants to help animal shelters care for homeless pets.
For animal shelters, the welfare of the unwanted or stray pets in their care is a primary concern. Providing food, veterinary care, a healthy environment and other elements of basic animal welfare is costly, and shelters become financially stretched. Grants are available to help ease some of these burdens, whether by providing assistance for medical procedures, equipment purchases, or aid to severely neglected animals.
Meacham Foundation Memorial Grant
This grant, administered by the American Humane Association, offers funding for animal shelter improvements and quality of care for animals. Eligible projects include spay/neuter equipment purchases, cattery or kennel renovations, veterinary equipment, environmental enrichment for animals, and equipment necessary to improve the welfare of animals in the shelter. Funds are also available for capital campaigns to build animal shelters. Grants cannot be used for operating expenses, vehicle purchase or routine maintenance.
Second Chance Fund
Also administered by the American Humane Association, the Second Chance Fund provides grants to animal shelters dealing with specific cases of abuse or neglect. Grants may be used for veterinary procedures for abused animals in order that they may be placed for adoption. Routine procedures, such as vaccinations, micro-chipping and spaying or neutering are ineligible for funding. This grant truly provides a second chance for animals whose needs may overwhelm a shelter's ability to pay for care without help.
Petsmart Charities
Petsmart Charities provide a number of animal welfare grants to nonprofit animal shelters. Among them is emergency relief funding for animals in large-scale disasters, victims of abuse, and rescue situations such as hoarding with many animals involved. Other Petsmart Charities grants fund purchase of spay/neuter equipment, training for shelter volunteer programs and targeted spay/neutering programs. Its Rescue Waggin program partners with animal shelters, providing full-time shelter support staff and shelter improvement monies to those shelters agreeing to take in healthy dogs from areas with high euthanasia rates and adopt them out.
Petco Foundation
The foundational arm of this national pet store awards various grants to animal shelters. Its 4Rs grants help nonprofit animal shelters through funds for spaying and neutering, rescue through adoptions, rehabilitate by training and rejoice by providing homes for pets. The Petco Foundation's Product Support grant donates food and other products carried by the store to animal welfare agencies. Capital grants fund building construction and repair, along with vehicle and equipment purchases.
