List Of Nonprofit Organizations For Animals

Helping domestic animals such as dogs is a popular focus for animal nonprofit organizations.


A variety of nonprofit organizations for animals operate in the United States and internationally. Some of these organizations focus on the well-being of domesticated animals, such as dogs and cats, and others strive to protect wildlife and endangered species, yet none of these organizations make money off of their efforts. Instead, they use grants and donations specifically to support their animals welfare programs.


American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals


The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, better known as the ASPCA, is the oldest animal nonprofit organization in North American. The ASPCA was started in 1866 and is headquartered in New York City. The organization provides support for pets and pet owners, at-risk animals and animal cruelty victims.


Humane Society of the United States


The Humane Society of the United States is the largest American nonprofit for the benefit of animals. Founded in 1954 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., the Humane Society works to promote anti-animal cruelty laws and investigations, corporate animal-friendly policy, disaster relief for animals, mobile clinics and wildlife sanctuary and rehab.


United Hope for Animals


United Hope for Animals is headquartered Southern California and operates in and around the city of Tijuana, Mexico. The organization works to help feral dogs and cats in Mexican pounds by providing rescue, adoption and foster care. They also offer spay and neuter services in local clinics and practice an anti-euthanasia policy.


World Wildlife Fund


The World Wildlife Fund is an international nonprofit environmental group founded in 1961 and based in Washington, D.C. They work to protect natural environments around the world, support endangered species, promote renewable resources and reduce human environmental pollution.


National Fish and Wildlife Organization


The National Fish and Wildlife Organization was founded in 1984 and provides funding to public and private conservation projects that support endangered and threatened species. The organization's four Keystone programs center on birds, freshwater fish, wildlife and habitat and marine and coastal ecosystems. Grants number at 10,800 worth a cumulative $1.5 billion.


National Wildlife Federation


The National Wildlife Federation was founded in 1936 and today is America's largest conservation organization. Their efforts focus on climate and energy conservation to combat global warming as well as the education of children about wildlife and the natural environment. The organization also directs private and federal funding to conserve natural habitats.


International Fund for Animals Welfare


Founded in 1969, today the U.S. base of International Fund for Animals Welfare (IFAW) is in Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts. The organization works to provide press about environmentally harmful commercial hunting and fishing. Campaigns include working for the welfare of seals, dolphins, porpoises, whales, bears, elephants, rhinoceros, primates, dogs and cats.


Defenders of Wildlife


Founded in 1947 and based in Washington, D.C., the Defenders of Wildlife have bases around the U.S., including Montana, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Idaho, Oregon and Mexico. The organization supports local conservation efforts in these regions to preserve native species and the environment.
