Animalrelated Career List

There are a number of animal-related job opportunities for those who enjoy working with animals.

Individuals who enjoy working with animals and learning about animal care can choose an animal-related career. Employers hiring entry-level animal-care positions offer on-the-job training or can request formal training, such as an undergraduate degree in wildlife biology. Some animal-related career opportunities include wildlife area coordinator, wildlife biologist supervisor, animal shelter clerk or animal care sales representative.

Wildlife Area Coordinator

According to a June 2010 report on the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) website, a wildlife area coordinator handles a land area of 5,000 acres or less. The coordinator performs animal control, conducts wildlife tours and helps supervise wildlife area technicians. Employers hire applicants with an undergraduate degree in wildlife management or one year of wildlife technician, a valid driver's license and knowledge of wildlife law enforcement. As of a June 2010 report on Simply Hired, a wildlife area coordinator earns an average annual salary of $48,000.

Wildlife Biologist Supervisor

The same June 2010 report on ODNR indicates that a wildlife biologist supervisor manages junior wildlife biologists and wildlife technicians. The supervisor compiles wildlife data, completes written wildlife policies and participates in meetings with legislative or special group meetings. Some employers hire applicants with a graduate degree in zoology or wildlife biology and the ability to perform research. Wildlife biologist supervisors complete courses in statistics and wildlife management. As of a June 2010 report on Simply Hired, a wildlife biologist supervisor earns an average annual salary of $42,000.

Animal Shelter Clerk

An animal shelter clerk assists customers who adopt animals in shelters. The clerk processes dog-license forms, explains pet fees and discusses animal care, such as visiting a veterinarian or grooming center. Some employers hire applicants with a high school or general equivalency diploma and offer on-the-job training. Other employers interview and hire applicants with past animal-related experience, such as a volunteer position. As of a June 2010 report on Career Builder Salary, an animal shelter clerk earns an average annual salary of $26,983.

Animal Care Sales Representative

An animal care sales representative sells the services of animal groomers, boarding houses and animal daycare owners. The sales representative visits clients, reviews animal services with fees and prepares animal care service contracts. Employers hire applicants with an associate's degree in business management who complete courses in advertising or sales. Another career path involves an animal-related degree and knowledge of sales contracts and warranty forms. As of a June 2010 report on Career Builder Salary, an animal care sales representative earns an average annual salary of $51,156
