Senior Citizen Activities In Gulf Shores Alabama

Gulf Shores, Alabama, offers a range of activities for those who call the community home, including its senior citizens. The community's senior center is the Harry Roberts Community House and Senior Center, which provides educational and recreational activities for adults who are more than 50 years old. As of July 2007, the median age of those living in the coastal community was 46.3 years.


Bingo


Each month, Bingo at the Harry Roberts Community House has a new theme. October is "Spooky Bingo," November is "Turkey Bingo" and December is "Santa Bingo." Individuals can play by bringing a new item that fits with the month's theme. Items can be anything from food to home decorations. Bingo begins at 10 a.m. the first Monday of each month at the community house.

Recreational Culinary Arts Classes


Faulkner State College, which has a campus in Gulf Shores, offers culinary classes through its Continuing Education program throughout most of the year. These classes include cake decorating, holiday cooking, camp cooking and bread baking. Classes cost between $40 and $50 as of October 2010 and registration is required.

Gulf Shores Island Quilters Guild


The Island Quilters Guild meets at 9:30 a.m. every third Wednesday of the month at the Harry Roberts Community House. The meetings include a short business meeting and workshop, door prizes, monthly challenge and sewing time among the members. Visitors are welcome and, as of October 2010, annual dues are $12.

Water Arthritis Program


During the water arthritis class at the Bodenhamer Center, individuals can improve their flexibility and pain management through exercise. The program is designed specifically for those with arthritis, and the exercises will help in the areas of coordination, mobility and overall daily tasks.

Pleasure Island Senior Citizens Club


The group meets each Monday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Gulf Shores Adult Activity Center. Each meeting includes activities and workshops, giving senior citizens in Gulf Shores an opportunity to meet new people and have new experiences at the same time.

Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge


The Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, located six miles outside of Gulf Shores, includes 7,000 acres of habitat for a variety of wildlife including sea turtles and the Alabama Beach Mouse. Free, guided tours are offered at the refuge where visitors can see birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians. The trails system through the refuge also offers visitors walks from one to four miles through different Alabama habitats.
