Ada Grants For Individuals

The public is becoming more familiar with the needs of the disabled.

Grants to individuals are not as common as grants to organizations. However, since the Americans with Disabilities Act took effect in 1990, individuals with disabilities qualify for a variety of grants and assistance opportunities. An area that has gained more funding for offering grants to individuals is disabled veterans who qualify for assistance in housing, health care and lifestyle needs. Grants by disability or type of assistance also exist.

Veterans Grants

Assistance is available for disabled veterans

Veterans who have been disabled may qualify for individual grants for different types of needs. The most reliable source of information for veterans is the US Department of Veterans Affairs. Disabled veterans will want to investigate the different types of grants and assistance available, which may include grants to purchase or retrofit a suitable home to accommodate the particular disability, medical needs grants for issues not covered through the VA, employment training grants for career changes necessitated by disability, or grants for purchasing a specially adapted vehicle.

Grants for Particular Disability Type

Individuals may qualify for grants due to a particular type of disability. Grants are available from the federal government through several departments, including the Department of Health and Human Services. State and local governments can also be clearinghouses for information about locally available grants. Also check the large service organizations for the particular disability, such as American Foundation for the Blind.

Grants for Specific Need

Occasionally, an individual may be able to qualify for a grant for a specific adaptive device, such as a ramp into a home or wheelchair lift for a vehicle. Also, service organizations exist to provide services, such as arts education or service pets; they may offer grants to individuals that are funded by a division of government and re-granted to the individual.
