You need not leave your pet behind when you go on vacation.
If you are moving overseas, or do not want to take your pet on a lengthy car or train journey, an option is flying them on a plane. In terms of procedure, it is fairly simple to fly a pet on a plane. Your primary concern must always be the welfare of your pet and If there is any uncertainty about his ability to travel, make alternative arrangements.
Instructions
1. Contact your airline directly and ask what particular requirements apply to traveling with pets. Make sure you tell them if your pet is traveling internationally, as additional requirements may apply, such as extra ventilation and a shipper's certification. Find out all the regulations and conditions of pet travel in advance. Remember that your pet will be traveling as cargo, which you cannot make a reservation for. Be prepared to wait for an available flight. Put your pet on a direct flight wherever possible, to reduce the risk of him being left outside in poor weather or handled roughly by airline personnel.
2. Consult your veterinarian before putting your pet on a plane. Animals who are in heat, pregnant or less than eight weeks old should not travel by plane. Most veterinarians will advise against putting an elderly pet or an animal with a nervous disposition on a plane. Think about what is best for your pet and do not put them at risk. Pug-nosed animals should not travel in a plane's cargo hold, due to potential breathing difficulties caused by their facial structure. Pug-nosed dog breeds include American Staffordshire, Shih Tzu, Pekinese, Boston Terrier and English Bulldog.
3. Obtain a health certificate from your veterinarian, within ten days of the journey, to confirm that your pet has been approved to travel by plane.
4. Prepare your pet's carrier. Follow the requirements issued by the airline. Label the carrier with your pet's name, your name and the travel destination. The carrier should be spacious enough for your pet to turn around in, but not so big that he will get injured during turbulence. Place a plastic container of dry food and clear feeding instructions on top of the carrier. Place a small bowl of frozen water inside the carrier. Remove all toys and muzzles, which could cause choking.
