There are several treatments that can help you cure your sick dog.
Dogs can suffer from many of the same---or similar---ailments and illnesses that their human owners can experience. And, as most dog owners know, dealing with a sick dog can be a difficult and heart-wrenching experience. Luckily, veterinary medicine has developed a number of tools for diagnosing sick dogs and many different treatments that help ease and eliminate specific symptoms.
Diarrhea Treatments
Diarrhea is very common in dogs and can have multiple causes. According to Dog Owner's Guide, these causes include parasites, viruses, bacteria, changes in diet, poor digestion and consumption of indigestible objects, such as rags, toys, food wrappers and other garbage items. One of the best treatments for doggy diarrhea is fasting. Simply withhold food from your dog for a 24-hour period, or for however long a veterinarian recommends. According to Organic Pet Digest, while this treatment may sound cruel, animals use the same method in nature, and it can help your dog break down waste products in the gut, rebuild damaged cells, organs and glands, and help reduce the effects of tumors, abscesses and infections. Alternatively, your veterinarian may recommend that you give your dog an anti-diarrheal medication, such as loperamide.
Vomiting Treatments
Vomiting in dogs can be a symptom of several conditions, including stress, an electrolyte imbalance, kidney, liver, or pancreas disease, an adverse reaction to medications or---the most common cause of dog vomiting---stomach inflammation. According to Dog Owner's Guide, one treatment for acute cases of vomiting is the same for a case of diarrhea: fasting. Alternatively, if your dog is vomiting after consuming water, serve him ice cubes instead. This will keep the dog hydrated without causing stomach irritation. If your dog commonly vomits after eating, this is likely because he is eating too much too fast. Feed your dog smaller portions in a greater frequency, or you put some rocks in his food bowl. The rocks will slow down your pooch while he eats, as he will have to work around them.
Car Sickness Treatments
If your dog vomits commonly (or only) during car-rides, this is likely a separate issue, known as car sickness. According to Dog Time, to prevent car sickness in your dog, leave a window open so he can get some fresh air. Alternatively, your veterinarian may prescribe a motion-sickness medication, such as dimenhydrinate.
Constipation Treatments
Canine constipation occurs when a dog's anal glands become infected or blocked. This can happen for a number of reasons, such as if the dog has a low-fiber diet, if he has swallowed a large bone, or if he has polyps or tumors on the bowels or constricted bowls. Treat this constipation by adding cereals, vegetables and herbs (particularly fangula bark and rhubarb) to your dog's diet. Alternatively, your veterinarian may have to manually evacuate your canine's bowels.
