From diploma courses in phlebotomy to popular medical schools, programs can be found in all higher education facility types. While most opportunities are available in Minneapolis, students can find colleges and universities in other cities as well.
University of Minnesota
The University of Minnesota has multiple colleges with programs relating to the health field that fall under the school's academic health center, which is made up of the medical school and the schools of nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine and public health. Over 70 percent of Minnesota's healthcare professionals have trained at this university. In addition to providing programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, the University of Minnesota engages in extensive research in the health field. Topics researchers here pursue include brain sciences, cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and infectious diseases.
Minnesota State University
The College of Allied Health and Nursing at Minnesota State University is home to 84 full-time faculty members, and approximately 2400 undergraduate and 275 graduate students every year. Programs are available in the following fields: dental hygiene, family consumer science, health science, human performance, speech & hearing rehabilitation and nursing. To help with tuition costs, the school offers numerous scholarship opportunities. In addition to taking courses, students can participate in faculty-run community service initiatives and research projects.
Minneapolis Community and Technical College
The Minneapolis Community and Technical College is located in downtown Minneapolis, and enrolls over 14,000 students annually. Health industry programs offered here include addiction counseling, dental assistant, phlebotomy, nursing and community health. A healthcare core curriculum is also offered that prepares students to go on to receive higher degrees in a health science field. Courses in this program train students in medical terminology, workplace safety, and legal and ethical considerations in healthcare. As a two-year college, all of the programs here award either a diploma certificate or an associate's degree, making students eligible to transfer to 4-year colleges and universities or enter directly into the workplace.
Mayo School of Health Sciences
The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, is over 100 years old. It offers many diverse programs in the health field. These include occupational therapy, nuclear medicine technology, clinical laboratory science, nursing, pharmacy, physical therapy, radiography and physician assistant. Classes are conducted in the Siebens Medical Education Building, the Stabile Building and the Guggenheim Building for Research and Education. Some of the facilities the school offers are a state-of-the-art anatomy laboratory and The Venables Library. Computer labs and a student common area are also available for general use.
