Animal Welfare Fundraising Ideas

Help an animal friend in need with some entertaining fund-raiser ideas.

Raising money for an animal welfare project can be a very rewarding experience but it can be difficult to plan effective, relevant fund-raising events to reach your donation goals. Get the community involved in ways that help demonstrate the importance of the companionship of animals; for instance, offer pet care services to local pet owners to bring awareness to your cause.

Pet-Sitting Service

Whether pet owners are gone for a few hours during the day or several weeks on business or vacation, it can be very difficult to leave family pets behind. Put owners' minds at ease by establishing an ongoing fundraiser of a trustworthy pet-sitting service in your area. If the person plans to be gone only a few hours, you can sell yourself more as a pet stimulation service; go over to the person's home to walk or play with the animals of the household during that period of absence on the owner's part. Charge a reasonable hourly or daily fee for your services, and use the proceeds to donate money towards animal welfare.

Dog Wash

While you don't have to limit washing services to pets of the canine variety, a dog wash is a sought-after service that will most likely attract the attention of local pet owners looking to clean up their pets. Keep your fees low to attract more customers; solicit local pet stores to see about receiving donations of shampoo and other materials that will help you run a successful business. If you aren't sure about the proper techniques for washing pets, find out about visiting a local pet salon or veterinary office to ask the experts. Explain that you plan to donate your earnings to animal welfare so they don't become concerned about competition; they may even offer to help your cause with a percentage of their revenue.

Pet Parade

A pet parade is an entertaining way to get pets out and about with the whole family. Ask permission to block off a parade route on a specific day and then advertise the upcoming event well in advance to ensure high levels of participation. Charge an entry fee to each participating household and then encourage participants to bring along the whole clan. Even if the pets can't freely roam on four legs, tell participants to tote fish bowls, gerbil cages and turtle terrariums along in wagons. For an extra silly parade, hold a pet costume contest; award the best dressed pet with a gift card to a local pet store.

Pet Treat Sale

Bake sales are a popular way to raise money for human causes, so put a furry spin on the classic fundraiser by baking up some delicious homemade pet treats. Get together with your fellow organization members to plan out what kinds of items you think will sell well. After you've made some decisions about what sizes and flavors of treats you want to bake, divide the work by designating a certain variety of treat to each member. With permission, set up a booth in a high-traffic area to sell your pet treats. Make it clear that all your proceeds will go towards animal welfare; this should help boost sales.
