Middle Schools In Downey California

There are four middle schools for kids in Downey.


Downey is located in southeastern Los Angeles County. This mostly residential area is home to first Taco Bell franchise and the oldest surviving McDonald's restaurant. The community of more than 107,000 is served by a handful of middle schools, all located within the four freeways that surround Downey.


East Middle School


East Middle School in eastern Downey is a traditional middle school that focuses on playing a positive role in the academic and social lives of its students. It features classes in the standard disciplines including social studies, fine arts, science and math. East Middle School also includes special programs like AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), designed to accommodate students with lower grades, usually minority students and those from low income families, who want to go to college. The program takes students from non-challenging classes and places them in highly academic classes, as well as providing them with a daily AVID elective for support. East Middle School is home to the Knights and offer intramural sports activities for its students. The school has a one teacher for every 22 students.


Sussman Middle School


Located in southern Downey, Sussman Middle School is another traditional middle school that offers an array of subjects for its students. The school boasts a highly developed website that allows students, parents and teachers to be in constant communication and log into 24 hours to grades and attendance information. The school has one teacher for every 20 students. The school is also home to the Pioneers sports and offers intramural sports for its students as well as numerous clubs from drama to art.


Griffiths Middle School


Located in northern Downey, Griffiths Middle School is a California Distinguished School. Along with its academic studies, Griffiths also works with its students on character development, helping them to make better choices and be more responsible. Griffiths also offers technology training for its students who are interested in learning more about the field of computers. The school also offers The Gifted And Talented Education (GATE) program, for students who need more stimulus in the classroom. Griffiths has a small class size with one teacher for every 17 students.


West Middle School


Students in West Downey attend West Middle School. Home to the Spartans, West Middle School is also a California Distinguished School. Like all other Downey middle schools, West Middle School offers a variety of classes in English, fine arts, math, social studies and science. The school is home to a robust selection of after-school clubs that range from journalism to band to a scrapbookers club, as well as intramural sports. The school has one teacher for every 22 students.
