Make Friends In A Virtual World With No Downloads

Online social networking sites allow you to meet and connect with new friends.

Using social networking sites is an effective way to make friends online without having to download any additional software to your computer. Many of the most popular social networking sites allow users to connect to new friends without add-ons, plug-ins or downloads. Connecting to these sites requires members to register for membership and to create profiles that feature personal information, as well as describe likes and interests. You can use social networking sites to meet and communicate with others who have similar interests.

Instructions

Facebook

1. Type "Facebook" into your address bar or the search bar of a search engine. The front page of the Facebook site asks you to provide your name, sex, date of birth, email and a password in order to register.

2. Fill in your profile with as many details as you choose by clicking on section tabs such as "About Me." You can choose to list your employer, former employers, schools attended, likes and interests and relationship status.

3. Set your security preferences by clicking on the "Account" tab and selecting "Privacy." There you will decide who can see your profile and how much content of your profile they will be allowed to access.

4. Select a profile picture by clicking on the main picture icon (a blank blue head with a question mark will be displayed until a profile picture is selected) and selecting a picture either from your personal computer or from the web.

5. Connect to friends in a variety of ways. You can search for old or current friends by name. You can search for people who work for the same company, or who went to the same schools you attended. By clicking the names of television shows, musicians, books and other media-related items, you will be directed to "fan" pages, where you can connect with other people who share similar interests. You can do the same for interest in political causes or politicians themselves.

Twitter

6. Type "Twitter" into your address bar or search for it using a search engine. Click on "Sign Up" and provide a full name (used when people search for you), a username (to be displayed with your profile) and an email address.

7. Fill in your profile with basic information. You can give your name, location and a short biography.

8. Select a profile picture for your account: Click on "Settings" in the top right-hand corner, then "Profile" and then on the blank picture icon. You can select a picture from your computer or from the web.

9. Communicate with current and new friends by typing messages of no more than 140 characters. If people like the messages that you write, they may choose to "follow" you, which means that the things you write will be displayed on their main Twitter page in real time. You can follow others, search for conversations by topic or search for people that you know. You can tag your 140-character posts to broader categories of discussion by using a hashmark (pound sign) before the word or words you would like to tag. For example, if you wrote "I am #hungry," and then tweeted it, you could click in "#hungry" and view other messages that people have written that use the word "hungry."
