Start A New Country

It can be challenging to start a new country.

Starting a new country is one of the easiest and hardest things you can do. It is as easy as declaring yourself and some area independent, and as hard as persuading the world to take you seriously. People start what are called micro nations for many reasons. Some start new countries because of political, ideological or religious differences with the nation they currently exist in. Others are looking for profit, fame or true self-governance.

Instructions

1. Define the area of your new nation. This can be a challenging task. There are no unclaimed islands or land left on Earth. So, in order to claim land, you will have to take it from an existing nation. Most countries will not recognize your sovereignty. Depending on how tolerant the country you are seizing land from is, you may be ignored or attacked. Another option is to create your country on a manmade structure. Abandoned structures at sea or even large boats have been used to make micro nations in the past. Some micro nations do not exist physically, or exist in small pockets. The ones that do not exist physically are not countries and are more akin to clubs of like-minded individuals on the Internet. There are some countries that intend to grow by encouraging like-minded individuals to declare themselves and their belongings a new province of the nation, building small pockets of the nation using the Internet for communication.

2. Decide what form of government you would like to have. There are many political theories as to what kind of government produces the best results. Remember, monarchy is easy, but it does not attract many immigrants.

3. Tell the other nations of the world that you are an independent nation. This can be a difficult task. In theory it is as easy as writing a letter to the secretary-general of the United Nations. However, in practice, unless you have a large population you are likely to be dismissed. Contact the governments of nearby countries and ask them to recognize your independence.

4. Reach out for help from other micro nations. There are groups of micro nations that help each other attain legitimacy and manage affairs. A link to one such resource can be found in the resources section. This is only a worthwhile step if your country allows foreign alliances.

5. Encourage people to immigrate. Your nation has a better chance of becoming respected if you have a large population.

6. Establish an economy for your new nation. Your country will need to have an income. Some micro nations are supported by the populace working in a neighboring country. Others offer to serve as tax shelters for the wealthy. Some make money based on the notoriety of the nation and offer tours and events for foreigners.
