Homesteading Venture Ideas

Homesteaders sometimes open their berry fields for self-picking.

The modern homesteader is a person who lives off the land in a self-sustainable environment that often includes large gardens and animals that provide food such as eggs and milk. To supplement their income, many homesteaders start small businesses based on what is being grown, what animals are being raised and he homesteaders' talents and skills. The options are many, and some people may be able to earn money year round from their homestead by incorporating different ventures.

Food and Beverages

A number of food and beverage items are grown or made by homesteaders. Maple syrup and apple cider are two such products. Selling fresh, organic produce and herbs at a roadside stand will bring a nice income, as will selling homemade breads and pies.

Can extra foods when canning for your family and sell the excess. Tie a tag, with the ingredients listed, on the jar with some twine or ribbon and place a sticker on the front of the jar with the name of the product.

Crafts

Hand-crafted items will also sell well at a roadside stand or at craft shows or consignment shops. Sell organically made goats milk soaps that have been molded into different shapes, adding herbs or flower petals to create a variety of scents. The ingredients should be written on paper wrapped around the soap and tied with twine.

Homemade candles are another option, as are quilted items such as pillow cases and blankets. Holiday wreaths and spring flower arrangements are other ideas.

Compost and More

As a homesteader raising animals, you are in a good position to make and sell compost and potting mix. Use animal manure in the compost bin, as well as table scraps and yard waste. Bag and sell the compost once it is able to be used in the garden.

Make potting soil to sell as well. Pasteurize the compost in a solar cooker to create the potting soil, and sell it alongside started plants and seeds.

Pick-Your-Own

Start a pick-your-own farm, whether it be apples, oranges or berries. People enjoy picking their own produce, even if they do not have enough time to grow the foods themselves.

Offer a set price according to the size of container or the weight of a bag. Lend the containers to customers or give them the option to buy containers they can reuse each year at your farm.
