The Best Pets For Toddlers

Puppies are an appropriate pet for older toddlers.

Children are never too young to learn about pets. Pets can help toddlers learn responsibility and allow them to form emotional bonds. However, there are some pets that fit best with young children. Fish, hermit crabs, puppies, birds and guinea pigs are some of the best pets for toddlers. Give children age-appropriate responsibilities that allow children to care for the pet such as cleaning food or water bowls, cleaning cages or feeding pets under very close parental supervision.

Fish and Hermit Crabs

Fish and hermit crabs make a great first pet for very young toddlers. These pets don't need to be held or handled. Children can observe fish and hermit crabs through their tanks and feed them with help from adults. Goldfish are appropriate for toddlers because they are easy to care for and can live in a simple tank with cold water and without a heater or filter to clean. Goldfish can live for five to seven years with proper care. Hermit crabs are fascinating for preschoolers to watch and they take up minimal space in the home. Hermits also have a long lifespan and can live up to 10 years.

Puppies and Kittens

Puppies are great pets for older toddlers and require a great deal of attention and energy that younger toddlers may not be able to provide. Select puppies that are known to be good with young children, are sturdy and are non-aggressive. Some examples are beagles, Boston terriers, cocker Spaniels and corgis. Research the personality of breeds of puppies to find a great match for your child and home. Kittens are the best pets for toddlers who are nurturing and who can aslo handle that the kitten may ignore them or act aloof.

Birds

Birds are one of the best pets for both younger and older toddlers. Children should not handle the birds but will enjoy observing them because they are active, colorful and can be interactive. Select a breed of bird that can talk, whistle or do tricks such a parrot, finch or canary. Patience is required, as it does take time to train birds. Birds have a very long lifespan and, depending on the breed, can live 15 to 30 years.

Guinea Pigs

Guinea pigs are one of the best pets for older toddlers who have the ability to gently handle animals. Guinea pigs are heavier and sturdier than gerbils and hamsters. They are gentle pets, very easy for toddlers to hold and receptive to young children. Toddlers can help feed the guinea pig pellets, water, hay and fresh vegetables. Guinea pigs can live four to eight years.
