Grants For Nonprofit Animal Rescues

Nonprofit application paperwork is necessary.

A nonprofit organization has certain tax advantages under the 501 (c) (3) classification, one of them being the ability to apply for tax-exempt grants. Paperwork in the form of a grant application will be necessary to apply for grant funding. It will take time and patience to fill out the paperwork, but the end result will be the reward. An animal rescue is a business like any other, with the usual associated costs. A grant will outline these costs as line items, so every potential expenditure needs to be accounted for. Line items typically will be administrative costs, amount allotted for public education, costs for adoption events, reimbursement for mileage, volunteer reimbursements and so forth. A brainstorming session with some members of the organization to tally all costs involved should be done before applying for a grant. Several grant makers cater to animal welfare causes.

PetSmart

A PetSmart shopper

PetSmart has developed grant programs specifically aimed at helping shelters and rescues with the issue of overpopulation control. It has grants established to pay for spay/neuter clinic equipment, spay/neuter for free-roaming cats (efforts to trap, neuter and return free-roaming cats), and targeted spay/neuter programs (for certain breeds or pets in low-income families). Its website has click links to more information on adoption and animal welfare agencies as well as a newsroom for up to date articles on inroads made by spay/neuter programs.

WellPet USA

Funds for medicines are provided by WellPet USA.

WellPet USA is dedicated to saving the lives of pets by concentrating on funds for medical assistance to local and national organizations. Its programs include the Meow/Bow Wow fund, which raises and distributes money to rescue groups for offsetting medical costs. Amber's Pets was created to raise money for rescues, shelters and families to treat pets with cancer. P.E.A.T. is designed for community education about pet welfare. Its website maintains a blog for current news and a page on volunteering, which posts volunteer opportunities. WellPet USA is a national network of animal professionals, rather than an all-in-one-place office where it can be reached. It provides a staff and board of directors directory, however, and shows individual emails with each name.
