New Jersey has several schools that offer training for a phlebotomy certificate. Phlebotomists puncture the skin to test for anemia, draw blood, insert intravenous catheters and collect specimens for medical lab testing. Hospitals, clinics, laboratories, physician's offices, blood banks, prisons, pharmaceutical companies and other medical facilities all employ phlebotomists. Training for this career includes curriculum in aseptic practices, blood collection techniques, infection control, circulatory anatomy, blood-borne diseases, data collection and interpersonal skills.
Branford Institute
Branford Institute, located in Elizabeth, offers a four-week combination EKG/phlebotomy certification program. Curriculum includes venipuncture techniques, proper handling of lab specimens, record-keeping, data input, patient intake processing and assisting physicians with bedside testing. The second part of the course trains students in electrocardiography (EKG) techniques, anatomy, medical terminology and take vital signs. Graduates are ready for entry-level work in hospitals, clinics and other medical facilities. Branford is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS).

Dover Business College
Dover Business College, with campuses in Clifton and Dover, offers a 9- to 14-month patient care technician program. Dover's program is a combined EKG/phlebotomy certificate, designed to maximize the graduate's career opportunities. Phlebotomy/hematology curriculum includes patient hygiene, blood-draw techniques, specimen collection, storage and transportation, and the EKG curriculum includes anatomy, physiology, testing procedures, medical terminology, CPR and patient care techniques. Students receive clinical experience as part of the training. Dover is accredited by ACICS.
