North Carolina has a mix of private and corporate foundations and community and state-wide foundations. Foundations, both public and private grant-making, make grants to organizations and individuals for charitable purposes. Foundations require grant applicants to meet eligibility requirements and to propose funding that meets one of their focus areas.
Bank of America (BOA)
Bank of America's (BOA's) Neighborhood Excellence Initiative provides grants through two programs. Neighborhood Builders provides 90 grants annually, two each in 45 markets, for operating support. The Local Heroes program provides grants in the same markets. Focus areas are arts and culture, education, health and human services, neighborhood preservation and community development. Local management teams coordinate additional local grants.

BlueCross BlueShield of North Carolina Foundation (BCBS)
Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) focuses on programs that use an outcome approach to improve the health and well-being of residents. The Health of Vulnerable Populations grants program focuses on improving health outcomes for at-risk populations. The Healthy Active Communities grant concentrates on increased physical activity and healthy eating habits. Eligible grant applicants must be located in North Carolina, be able to provide recent tax forms and, depending on the size of the nonprofit, provide an audit.

The Duke Endowment
The Duke Endowment provides grants to qualified 501(c)(3) organizations and rural United Methodist Churches. The Duke Endowment's focus areas are child care (especially vulnerable children), health, rural church and higher education. Eligible child care applicants are accredited, licensed residential children's homes and child advocacy centers. Eligible health care applicants include community programs, early intervention, wellness and prevention, quality of care, rural health and workforce development.

Foundation for the Carolinas
The Foundation for the Carolinas makes grants through two programs---Regional Affiliate Grantmaking Programs and Client Grantmaking Programs. Ten regional affiliate community foundations are located in North Carolina. In addition, the Foundation manages charitable funds for corporations, private individuals and families. Eligibility guidelines vary depending on the charitable fund to which an applicant applies.

The North Carolina Community Foundation has 60 affiliate offices throughout North Carolina and manages 1,000 endowed funds. While eligibility and focus areas vary depending on the charitable fund, the foundation's focus areas are youth, women and communities of color.

Sisters of Mercy of North Carolina Foundation
The Sisters of Mercy of North Carolina Foundation provides grants to organizations that focus on health care, social services and education. Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation (ZSR)
The Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation (ZSR) prefers to support organizations and programs that focus on systemic and policy reform and that have an impact across the state or in multiple counties. Grants also support projects that are community-based and that respond to need in rural communities.
