Rescue Endangered Animals

Polar bears are among the most widely discussed endangered animals.

Endangered animals are those that are so few in number they are in jeopardy of dying out altogether and becoming extinct. While not every endangered animal can be saved, there is hope for many of these species. Please note, approaching endangered animals in the wild does not help them. In fact, coming near a wild animal could put both you and the animal at risk. Thankfully, there are many other ways people can help to rescue endangered animals.

Instructions

Rescuing Endangered Animals

1. Assess the reason for endangerment. The first step in helping to bring an endangered species back from the brink of extinction is to understand why it has become endangered. Sometimes there are very specific reasons, such as a toxin in the air or water, habitat loss, over hunting, or another cause that has pushed the species to the edge. If a specific reason for endangerment can be found, that reason can be addressed directly.

2. Protect the animal's habitat. In order for an endangered species to survive, it must have some place to live. Especially in cases in which the animals can only be found in a specific region (such as on a single mountain, or in one coral reef), it is very important to the future survival of the species that this habitat be kept intact as much as possible.

3. Educate the public. One of the best ways to help save an endangered species is to endear it to the public. Educate people of all ages on why the endangered animal is important not only to the ecosystem, but to the people themselves. Endangered animals can be a huge eco-tourism draw. If the general public is taught about the endangered animal, the chances are much higher that they will care enough about the animal to help rescue it.

4. Donate. There are numerous organizations that work to rescue endangered animal species and prevent their extinction. One of the best ways that anyone, regardless of age or ability, can aid endangered species is to help these organizations do their work. It takes money to fight for laws that protect endangered animals, and to set up and run state or national parks. If you see an organization that is helping to rescue an endangered species, help save that species by supporting the organization financially.
